The LGBT+ Liberation Group exists to provide a safe space within EUSA where self-identifying LGBT+ students can come together, discuss the issues affecting them, and campaign to improve their student experience. There are many identities which fall under the LGBT+ umbrella including, but not limited to, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, and asexual, and all students who self-define as LGBT+ are welcome to join.
Campaigns and Events
In the past, the LGBT+ Liberation group has been active in campaigning for equal marriage and against the oppression of the LGBT+ community in Russia during the Sochi Olympics. In February, the group also organises a programme of events for LGBT+ History Month, including guest lectures, film screenings and the annual Gaylidh.
This year’s Convener, Rachel Ram, is keen to focus on combatting LGBT+ discrimination at Edinburgh, as well as raising awareness for some of the less well-known gender, sexual, and romantic identities.
National Union of Students (NUS)
As well as fighting for justice within Edinburgh, the LGBT+ Liberation Group is also involved in the NUS LGBT Campaigns, both in Scotland and at a national level. Every year, the Group sends delegates to the NUS Scotland and NUS UK LGBT conferences. If you’d like to get involved in the NUS campaigns then you can check out the website here or contact the LGBT+ Group Convener using the contact details below.
All self-identifying LGBT+ students are welcome to get involved in the LGBT+ Liberation Group. To find out more you can join the Facebook Group or email the group Convener, Rachel Ram, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
